The Secondary Vocational School in Prievidza

The Secondary Vocational School in Prievidza was established in 1947 and is a part of the secondary school system in Slovakia.  It is a state co-educational day school with an agricultural specialization in addition to general education.  The school is situated in the Upper Nitra Region about 190 km east of the Slovak capital Bratislava.  It has a good infrastructure and is easily accessible by public transport.  Approximately 340 students aged 15 – 19 attend the school and we have a staff of 45 counting both teachers and service personnel.  The two foreign languages taught in our school are English and German.  As for 2005, the school teaches up to A-level standard.  After the 4th year the students graduate after sitting for a written and oral exam called "Maturita“ ( a kind of A-level exam).  The students finishing a 3-year study program take a final apprentice exam.  They are awarded an Apprenticeship Certificate. They can continue with 2-year superstructural studies in order to take the "Maturita“.

For the purposes of school tuition there are 13 general classrooms and 7 specialised classrooms.  The school has 2 own gymnasiums and its own football ground.  To meet the needs of practical training the school is provided with its own workrooms of 4 classrooms and a car driving simulator (used for driving lessons), garages and a gardening ground.  Practical training also takes place in contractual businesses in Prievidza.

We offer the following study programs (3 and 4- year duration) with an agricultural and commerce emphasis, which are :

  • flower arranging - Commercial worker

  • horse breeding and riding - Agri-tourism

  • butcher - Agricultural entrepreneurship

  • agriculturist- machinery operator

  • agriculturist – specialization in services

  • landscape and garden services worker

  • gardening

  • technical-administrative worker

The students actively engage in European-wide projects through a European social fund project or a Leonardo da Vinci project through which our students participate in work-study programs in Austria and Finland.
